The CSSDM commissioned the Smith Vigeant+Aedifica consortium to assist in the planning and construction of a high school on the site of the existing Marie-Anne school in Montreal. The project presented major challenges, both programmatically and geographically.
Challenges included the design of a reversible building to meet two MEQ programs: that of a high school destined to eventually become a neighborhood elementary school. In addition, siting a school on the site of an existing school dedicated to young adults meant preserving the distinct identities of the two schools, managing populations of different ages, and integrating harmoniously with the existing architecture.
Le projet incluait également le défi de proposer une volumétrie adaptée à la dualité des échelles urbaines, en considérant à la fois la zone commerciale et la zone résidentielle. De plus, la proposition de volumétrie devait tenir compte de deux axes majeurs de circulation, avec des enjeux particuliers liés à l'accès et à la sécurité.
L'école secondaire transitoire, une fois achevée, comportera un pôle sportif, une bibliothèque, une cafétéria, des classes d'arts, des laboratoires de sciences, ainsi que dix-huit (18) classes régulières. Ultérieurement, elle sera reconvertie en école primaire de quartier afin de répondre aux prévisions d'augmentation de la population d'élèves dans le quartier.
