TRANSFORMATION PROPOSAL
Mile-Ex is a district that has set out to conquer a new identity. Urbanization is contrasted there, industrial buildings rub shoulders with new architectural projects.
Among this industrial heritage, we find 6666 rue Saint Urbain, located at the intersection of rue Saint-Zotique Ouest, a former 1960 textile factory made up of two buildings over 5 floors, with a total surface area of 370,000 square feet.
Following the takeover by the promoter TMSA in 2014, SVA proposed a complete rehabilitation in a multi-use complex, which has become an emblematic place for the balance of life in urban areas. In contrast with the original vocation of the buildings, centered only around production, the new complex responds to various issues such as social diversity through places of discussion and meetings; economic growth through support for jobs in the new economy and strengthening of the commercial offer; while ensuring the extension of the cultural identity of the district.
The different periods of life are thus combined in a rehabilitated complex, creating convivial spaces and giving new life to this disaffected building which generated a rupture in the urban space.
The plurality of uses is reflected in the design of spaces and the characterization of accesses. A central “Galleria”, placed in the extension of St-Zotique Street, serves as a visual signal, making the complex visible from St-Laurent Boulevard and creating traffic to this new place of commercial activity. Multiple accesses make the building more permeable to its exterior, and spaces for transitions to the exterior are created, such as a roof terrace and a garden space behind the building. On the upper floors, co-working and office spaces house new economy activities.
