Connection with Nature: “The Mountain Above the Clouds”
A symbiosis between the mountain peaks and the moving clouds.
The tourist centre draws inspiration from the surrounding mountains and natural setting. The building is composed of three volumes echoing the three mountains of its landscape. Each of the three spaces hosts a distinct attraction: an exhibition hall, a projection room, and environmental science areas. The “mountain” serves as the gateway to the Lishui Baiyun National Forest Park, welcoming visitors to begin their journey of discovery.
Inside the mountain (the building), a series of individual modules are scattered throughout the vast interior. These irregular, rounded pods detach from the roof structure to create porous, fluid spaces that offer a unique sense of discovery, as though one were within the park itself. The program elements and educational activities are housed within these capsules. As visitors ascend, the impressive wooden structure is gradually revealed.
Upon reaching the uppermost level within the mountain, visitors “walk on the cloud.” The cloud walkway winds between the peaks of the mountain-like structure and extends over the hillside bordering the pond. Along this path, travelers encounter ever-changing perspectives of the city and the enchanting mountain landscapes. The building exists in symbiosis with its site—visually, spatially, and physically. At the end of their walk along the cloud, visitors are invited to enjoy the local flavors of nature by sharing refreshments or a meal at the rooftop restaurant.
