National Museum of Carthage

Tunis, Tunisia
Client
Republic of Tunisia – Ministry of Cultural Affairs

2023
The international multidisciplinary architecture competition, organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Cultural Affairs of the City of Tunis, aimed to requalify the Acropolis of Byrsa and rehabilitate the National Museum of Carthage.
The site is understood as a fragment to be reinserted into the city and its landscape—through physical and social, intellectual and sensory connections. A fragment intended to bring together the revealed Carthage, the imagined Carthage, and the lived Carthage. An element to be recomposed: today set apart from the city despite overlooking it, yet capable of becoming attractive, coherent, comfortable, and open to multiple uses.
One of the project’s ambitions was to reweave the link between the museum and the archaeological site, itself long considered an open-air museum. This was pursued by creating constant references between the two, but above all by repositioning the current monumental ensemble—the cathedral and the former school of the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers, now the museum)—within the continuity of the Punic, Roman, and Christian acropolises that once succeeded one another on this very site.
