Located in a residential neighborhood, the project focuses on redeveloping parts of the Hubert-Reeves Pavilion and adding a new two-storey building.
The extension provides space for 8 classrooms, 1 multipurpose room, 2 kindergartens, 1 library, 1 gymnasium, and the related service areas. Designed with freedom and dynamism, the new wing establishes a welcoming dialogue with the existing building. Two distinct volumes define the new functions: classrooms and multifunctional auxiliary spaces to the west; and the gymnasium and library volume to the east.
To enhance the relationship between interior and exterior spaces and improve functional flow, the project rethinks interactions. The ground floor of the extension is highly open, with multipurpose rooms connecting directly to the inner courtyard. The agora, linking the existing building and the extension, also opens onto the small courtyard, making these spaces multifunctional.
The gymnasium opens directly onto the main courtyard with generous glazing, encouraging interaction. These features make the project accessible, active, and community-oriented.
Wood was integrated throughout the new construction. To reduce costs and enable wood as a structural choice, a hybrid system (light-frame and mass timber) was selected. Strategic areas showcase an elegant glulam structure, such as the agora connecting the extension with the existing building, and the new gymnasium. The rest of the structure uses more conventional load-bearing walls and joists. Integrated furniture and interior wood cladding are also included.
Finally, the project requalifies the block at the intersection of Millen Avenue and Sauriol East Street. In relation to the church and presbytery of the Sainte-Rita parish, the new building helps create a community hub on Sauriol Street. Its volume, slightly projecting beyond the Hubert-Reeves Pavilion, respects the alignment of neighboring façades while establishing a connection with the Julie-Payette Pavilion, located on Durham Street to the northeast.
