2021: GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN
Gold Laureate, Category: Public Building / School & Preschool Building
Carried out in consortium with Smith Vigeant Architectes, the project involved the expansion of Christ-Roi Elementary School of the CSSDM, located in the Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough.
The school was extended over three floors, adding nine classrooms, a kindergarten, a daycare, and a gymnasium. The project required creative solutions to achieve both architectural and urban integration.
Creating a harmonious whole, the expansion echoes the principles of the existing building while redefining the school’s relationship with its context. On the street side, a sculpted volume announces the new hall as well as its social and active functions. On the courtyard side, greater transparency and color are expressed, giving the institution a personalized character while respecting its original pavilion. Bright façade colors complement and highlight the original brick.
The two buildings are organized around a spacious central staircase bathed in natural light and vibrant colors. The staircase provides clear connections with the existing school while offering a playful and comfortable space for social interaction. The entrance hall, through its generous dimensions and openness, creates a welcoming transition space between the neighborhood, the daycare, and the schoolyard.
Color ensures the institution’s warm presence in the public realm, harmonizing the old and the new while stimulating learning and shared spaces.
