Drolet House
Location
Montreal, QC
Client
M. Brûlé
Area
274 m2 / 2 946 ft2
Year
2011
Located in the heart of the Plateau, the Drolet Residence fits seamlessly into its urban surroundings, making the most of the patch of greenery that surrounds it. The house stands as a contemporary volume firmly anchored to the street, yet open to the adjacent park.
The original duplex, repeatedly altered and deemed irrecoverable, has been transformed into a bi-generational residence comprising a 55 m² studio at the core of a 300 m² main dwelling.
Natural light floods the interior from all sides. The numerous openings frame views toward the outdoors, changing with the seasons. The staircase, topped by a large skylight, forms the central element of the home. Its spatial geometry creates a play of light and shadow across the upper floors. The dark masonry and walnut-colored doors and windows contrast with the white interior walls. Wood is omnipresent — with a birch staircase, cedro windows, and bamboo floors and kitchen.
